Tourney Takes Center Court
Eddie Ford, proud father and coach, has the cure for basketball fever – the annual National Grassroots Shootout and Nike National Middle School Championships.Basketball isn’t just a sport to Henderson resident Eddie Ford.
It’s a way of life.
“I’ve been involved with basketball all my life,” says Ford, 62, who heads up a firm called Kentucky Sports Marketing. “I played in high school and college, and I was a high school coach early in my career.”
Ford’s son, Travis, is a former University of Kentucky basketball star and is currently head coach at the University of Massachusetts.
Ford has been involved with Nike for more than 20 years putting together all-star teams to represent Kentucky for sponsorships and organizing basketball tournaments.
And it’s because of his efforts that Henderson was able to host two major basketball tournaments in spring 2006 – the National Grassroots Shootout and the Nike National Middle School Championships.
The former was a high school tournament that drew 52 teams from 14 states; the latter drew 30 middle school teams from eight Midwestern states.
Ford says it’s “a strong possibility” the two tournaments could be held in Henderson again next year, but he still needs to evaluate the logistics and costs involved.
“[Organizing the tournaments] is tiring … but I enjoy doing it, and I hope it keeps me younger,” Ford says with a laugh. “Otherwise, I’m basically retired. But I’ve been doing basketball so long, I don’t know how to quit.” For more information on the tournaments, visit Ford’s Web site at eddiefordhoops.com.
