Henderson's Champion
At age 94, Cleo Royer – activist, volunteer and occasional actress – is Henderson’s living history.Cleo Royer knows Henderson like the back of her hand – and Henderson knows her.
The 94-year-old has been active in the community since she moved to Henderson in the 1940s with her husband Cliff “C.C.” Royer.
“She’s always been an outgoing person, and she’s had friends of all ages throughout her life,” says Charlotte Royer, Cleo’s daughter-in-law. “She is well-loved by everybody, because she’s always been helpful to the community.”
A member of the Henderson Regional Hospital Foundation for 24 years, Cleo Royer was the initiator of the foundation’s annual antique show, which has become a local tradition and one of the organization’s major fundraisers.
For 20 years, Royer was active in Mary Lynn’s, a civic organization that made and sold homemade goodies to raise scholarship money for Henderson Community College.
“Cleo also does beautiful needlepoint and has been making handmade Christmas ornaments since 1970,” Charlotte Royer says. “She sent several of them to the White House when President Nixon was in office and got a response, and she’s given them away to so many Henderson people. Some of our neighbors have enough of her ornaments to decorate their whole tree.”
Royer even got a taste of stardom in 1991 when the movie A League of Their Own was filmed in Henderson. After a cast member met her, she was asked to play the part of Ma Bradley, the boarding house mother for the film’s baseball team.
“She really had a good time,” Charlotte Royer says. “The director Penny Marshall and stars Rosie O’Donnell and Geena Davis all came to her home.”
With experiences such as these, it’s no wonder Royer has chosen to stay in Henderson for more than 50 years.
“I like everything about Henderson,” Cleo Royer says. “It’s the garden spot of the world.”
