Serving Up Blues & Barbecue

Old-fashioned blues music goes hand-in-hand with mouthwatering barbecue at the annual W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival.

The W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival in Henderson is a delight for all your senses.

The smell of barbecue wafting through the city and the sound of nationally known blues artists draws more than 30,000 festival-goers to Henderson in June for the eight-day event, which is in its 16th year and has become one of the largest, free music festivals in the nation.

The festival celebrates the life and musical accomplishments of W.C. Handy, the “Father of the Blues,” who lived in Henderson in the late 1800s. It also honors the area’s tradition of serving up delicious barbecue.

“We start the festival on Saturday with the Taste of Henderson Barbecue in Central Park,” says Christi Dixon, chairman of the Henderson Music Preservation Society, which sponsors the festival. “Eleven local barbecue teams set up and cook on the street, and you can get anything from mutton to pork.”

Community organizations and churches entertain festivalgoers with a variety of programs and activities Sunday through Tuesday, and the big four-day musical event takes place Wednesday through Saturday at Audubon Mill Park.

“Anybody who is interested in blues would recognize the names of the performers. We had Little Milton last year, and this year the Tommy Castro Band will be headlining,” Dixon says.

More than 100 volunteers help put on the festival.

“The community is very supportive and thankful for the festival and all the people it brings in who spend money in Henderson,” Dixon says. “We’re trying to keep the blues tradition alive and share it with new generations.”
