CATCH-ing Up to Good Health
Kids may catch colds easily, but through CATCH, the remedy is just as accessible.Children’s health is a priority in Henderson County, thanks to Community Access to Child Health, commonly known as CATCH.
A national initiative by the American Academy of Pediatrics, CATCH was brought to Henderson in 1994.
“The purpose of CATCH is to bring health care to children who have trouble accessing it, whether it’s because of low income, lack of insurance or transportation problems,” says Lee Conrad, CATCH coordinator for Methodist Hospital, which helps fund the program. “We have licensed sites around the community. The primary one is at the Salvation Army, and there are satellite sites at four elementary schools and the high school. Some sites are open once a week and some every other week.”
Children can visit the CATCH sites for everything from acute illnesses to school physicals. The program serves some 900 patients annually, many of whom would otherwise not have received care.
“Many people are aware of the program now,” Conrad says. “The people who are seeing the difference the most are school nurses because they know when kids aren’t being seen by physicians. School nurses have been great advocates for the kids.”
Methodist Hospital raises money for the CATCH program each year through its Annual Golf Classic. The event is held in June at the Henderson Country Club and features contests and other activities.
“Our goal is that all children will receive the health care they need to make them able to attend school regularly and be successful further on in their lives,” Conrad says.
